Baking with Ro

dneumann1972

Baking with my grandbaby has quickly become one of my favorite ways to spend time together. There's something magical about the way little hands eagerly scoop flour, stir batter, or sneak tastes of frosting. It's messy, imperfect, and absolutely heartwarming—a sweet way to create memories that I hope will last a lifetime.

I've heard people say that grandparents who choose to stay involved in their grandchildren's lives often do so because they loved being parents. That rings so true for me. Parenting was one of the most rewarding parts of my life, and now, with my grandbaby, I feel like I get to relive those precious days—only this time, it's with a little more patience and a lot more sprinkles!

I remember baking with my kids, and I've even written about Annie the Porcupine baking with her mom just because. So, I decided to bake with Ro. We made a simple chocolate cake, and he was so excited about the whole process. He enjoyed counting the eggs as we broke them into the bowl and helping me unwrap Hershey kisses to melt for the frosting—thinking he was being sly when he popped one in his mouth, hoping I didn't see him.

He was thrilled when I pulled the cake out of the oven but had to wait for it to cool before we could frost it. At first, he was reluctant to taste the frosting to make sure it was just right, but after I tried it, it didn't take much convincing for him to help lick the spoon once we were done.

Watching my grandbaby's face light up when he got to show his mom the chocolate cake he made was the best part. He made sure I cut the cake in half so he could share it with his mom and dad. It reminded me of the joy my own children felt when we baked together. These small acts of togetherness build a foundation of love and security, creating memories that last a lifetime.

Being a grandparent is a gift—a second chance to experience the simple joys of raising children, this time with a new perspective. Baking with my grandbaby is just one of the ways I get to embrace that gift, but it's quickly becoming one of the most cherished. He's already asked to bake with me again, pulling up his step stool to the counter and excitedly helping me mix this or that. The memories we make will always be the sweetest part.
