Growing up, my family didn’t celebrate Halloween. I didn’t dress up or go trick-or-treating. But every summer, I had the joy of designing a costume for a costume party with my friends. We’d gather ideas, selecting themes like books, movies, or even Bible characters. I remember the thrill of brainstorming, transforming ideas into characters with just what I had on hand. It was all about the fun of creating and becoming someone new, even if just for an afternoon.
As I got older, costume-making became something I was excited to share with my children. I began sewing their Halloween costumes by hand, discovering the joy of crafting for my little ones. Each costume became a mini project—a labor of love, really. Though hard work, it always paid off tenfold when they slipped into their outfits, transforming into their chosen characters right before my eyes.
And today, that tradition is something I feel lucky to continue with my grandbaby. Recently, I crafted a dinosaur costume for him, complete with scales and a big, swishing tail. Watching him roar like a tiny T. rex and even chase his own tail at a Halloween event was unforgettable! Moments like these make the hours of sewing and problem-solving worth every second. This tradition of handmade costumes is a special bond we share, a celebration of creativity, love, and cherished memories stitched into every seam.
Now, even as the Halloween is only a few days away, I find myself already dreaming about next year’s costume ideas. It’s hard not to imagine all the possibilities—what new character will he want to be? Each year brings a new canvas and another chance to bring his imagination to life.
